Abstract

Beginning in the mid-19th century, native American children were forcibly removed from their parents and sent to boarding schools, oftentimes clear across the country, the 'assimilate' them into the white man's culture. Since then, education programs have been developed to similarly 'assimilate' African American and Latino children into the dominant U.S. Culture. This project will entail conducting archival research on boarding schools and charter schools to analyze similar themes within them. Students will be guided by the professor in using Atlas/ti, a qualitative software program, in content analysis methods.
